The Place You Never Left with Pianist Adam Marks

Sunday, May 6, 5:30 pm

The Place You Never Left, the debut of the New Triad Recital Theaterª production, tells the story of a pianist struggling to find his own voice. The program begins with an exploration of the instrument and experimentation with sound production. Success and virtuosity comes easily, and there is a brief moment where resolution seems to occur. If one doesn't struggle for success, however, how can longevity be assured? Skills that come quickly often depart even faster. Ironically, the traditional success throws our subject into a depression, hitting rock bottom with a return to extended technique. Eventually, the pianist finds a jazzy rhythm, and things begin to take shape. The tempo quickens, and in the end, he realizes that his individuality-a combination of extended technique, traditional virtuosity, and jazzy rhythm-is what will bring him satisfaction. The true form of virtuosity is in finding oneself. The program will feature works by Cowell, Rakowski, Debussy, Crumb, Gershwin, Rzewski, and others.
